Title: Developing a neurocognitive and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy based intervention for stroke rehabilitation and management for use in Zimbabwe
When a person suffers aquired brain injury, e.g. stroke, they experience emotional, behavioural and cognitive problems that interfere with recovery and rehabilitation. For instance, 30-70% stroke survivors suffer neurocoginitive decline and consequently struggle to come to terms with their new, compromised conditions. Caregivers also get frustrated at the seemingly lake of cooperation from patients and the burden of caring for such patients. Structured rehabilitation and management programs allow for better recovery and function. An intervention including caregivers is therefore necessary. The broad aim of this study is to evaluate existing interventions, then develop/adapt appropriate neurocognitive and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based intervention for stroke patients and a technical training for caregivers in Zimbabwe.
The objectives are to:
Evaluate the general knowledge of neurologic conditions among community dwelling adults and use findings to develop technical training for caregivers.
Evaluate the efficacy of interventions aimed at improving the quality of life of stroke survivors and caregivers in lower to middle-income countries through a systematic review.
Develop a neurocognitive and CBT based intervention and pilot it on stroke survivors and their caregivers at Parirenyatwa Stroke Unit.
