Site and Background
Clínica de Familia La Romana is a non-governmental organization working to improve the health of families in the Dominican Republic through comprehensive health services, education, and research. At Clínica de Familia we aim to improve the quality of life of the poorest and most vulnerable populations in the eastern Dominican Republic by providing high quality health, education, and psychological support services to those most in need, including adults and children with HIV, sex workers, and adolescents. Clínica de Familia provides comprehensive primary and HIV-specialized outpatient medical care, community and home-based services, and an annual summer camp for HIV-positive children. Clinical services offered include general medicine,pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, cardiology, diabetes care, laboratory, ultrasound, x-rays,family planning, and mental health services. Clínica de Familia is one of the largest HIV clinics int he country, serving more than 2000 clients with HIV, and it oversees special programs for the reduction of vertical transmission of HIV, specialized clinics for high risk men and sex workers, and prenatal and reproductive health care for adolescents through the Maternal-Infant HealthAnnex, in collaboration with the largest public hospital in the province. Clínica de Familia conducts research and provides learning opportunities for medical, public health, nursing,dental and health-related students, residents, and fellows, from both the Dominican Republic and abroad.
