Enrique Rojas, PhD

profile shotGHES US Fellow 2013-2014

Fellowship site: icddr,b, Dhaka, Bangladesh
US institution: Stanford University

Research interest: The Ecological Dynamics of Cholera Epidemics

Enrique’s broad career goal is to apply ideas from engineering, physics, and computer science to health related problems in microbiology. He first became interested in applying
physical principles to biology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he designed a prototype solid-state biosensor for thyroid hormone. During graduate school he transitioned into cell biophysics, studying the mechanics of cell growth in plants. After his PhD, Enrique spent six months as a volunteer faculty at the Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Patan, Nepal, where he taught medically relevant chemistry, biology and physics to first-year medical students.
Enrique will spend his fellowship year at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) in Dhaka, under the mentorship of K. C. Huang, PhD. His research will focus on examining the diversity of interepidemic reservoirs of Vibrio cholera.
